Y'know what? That jet is so ugly, it looks good. Kind of grows on ya...

It wasn't near as ugly as the Cutlass, the Ford looked better....

One thing you might want to check on. During the early days of the gull gray/white scheme, I don't believe they painted the gear door edges red.

Quick scan of Elliot shows MIL-C18263B dated Feb. 12, 1959 calls for the red edge on the gear doors. I can't find anything earlier, so presumably it went into effect after that. There is also a pic of a VX-4 Demon w/o the red edges and a Demon from an unidentified unit with the red edges.

That would be about right. I'm thinking that FORD's didn't have red door edges. I'll have to look in my Ginter book to see. Also during the early days of the Gull Gray/White days, the rudders weren't white.

Ill post some Skyray pics tomorrow from the same visit. I know the restorers at the Museum are crazy about being perfect in every detail, and they have the research to back up everything they do....I'm thinking the red edges are correct...but I don't know for sure, as I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express....ever....

From the photo stream that Spook posted in the O'Club. You should really check it out: 300 plus pages and I'm only on page 100 or so, but they 'appear' to be all old DoD images that he's got in his stream on Flickr.

And yes, the doors appear to be white

Wow! Till I saw the red shirt in the background, when I saw the first photo I was thinking "I don't remember a Demon spotted on the Midway right there"

Default Yes, but

McDonnell pioneered the practice of painting the interior of gear doors and speed brakes red:

While it's true that the door edges aren't red in the F3H picture posted by easixpedro, there are also pictures of operational F3Hs with red door edges as well.

And with no red on the leading edge of the nose gear door but red on the edges of the doors otherwise.

Default Better Example

For a closeup of the red edges of the main gear doors on that cat shot picture, a picture of all red inboard main landing gear doors on an early F3H, and some F3H Sparrow/Sidewinder stuff, go to http://tailhooktopics.blogspot.com/2...d-sparrow.html
