Default We need a "What if" Group build!

I am a big fan of "What if's"...

So I would like to make a suggestion for a what if Group build that would include all subjects... Personally I am a Jet guy, but why let everyone else miss out..

Chris

Do I have to prepare a two day safety course for the members before starting mate?

Actually Colin, first time at taking on something like this, so would appreciate any input...

At first I was thinking about for example, building an aircraft that your country does not fly, or wanted to fly. But then I thought that a lot of people like certain subjects, but would just like to do a new scheme for them, or their squadron... So I am open to a "what if" on any scale...

I actually got the idea from when Dave got a scheme that he designed put on a tail of a Harrier... That was cool....

Not much help if you're banned Martin

I personally think that groupbuilds should have themes, otherwise they become so open that they're pointless - IMO. My personal preference on "what if" is rooted in reality, although I know and accept that other people like to build complete fantasy projects. I think they have less to do with "what if" rather than complete fiction, so if you need a suggestion for a theme, I'd choose something that might have been. There are plenty of examples:

Iranian F-16s (they were on the original customer list)
Australian RA-5C Vigilante (NA tried to sell it to the RAAF)
RAF F-111K (two aircraft built, but never completed)
RAF and others TSR.2 (if it hadn't been cancelled...)
Norwegian P-2 Neptune (yes, it's what the RNoAF wanted, but we were given HU-16s)
Belgian/Danish/Dutch/Norwegian YF-17 or F-18L, SAAB JaktViggen or Mirage F.1E (if the deal of the century had worked out differently)
F-16/79 in foreign air force markings (if Reagan hadn't loosened the export laws and allowed selling the F-16A/B/C/D)
F-20 in Bahrain markings (intended launch customer)
Brazilian AF Rafale (seems like a strong candidate)
USAF A330/KC-45

A What-if Gb in the future would be good. I have the parts to do an F-111B laying around and I know where to get some killer VF-84 decals...

Actually thought about a F-20 in Bahrain markings. Leaning toward RNZAF F-20 with Gekko decals and a JF-17 in Tunisian markings

I'd be in for this. I moderated the What-if GB at ARC a while back, and had a blast doing it. I don't know if I can build anything for it (since I'm temporarily out of modeling and not likely to get back into it within the next 6 months or so), but I'd be glad to help out.

Cool. Why not contact Samurai Chris and throw some ideas around for guidlines and such and we'll go from there.

Well, at first, I was thinking about not being able to use an aircraft, or vehicle that the country is already using. But I felt that to be a little too restrictive.. So I thought about being able to put Marine markings on an F-16 or something. Or even doing a what if as shown with the F-14 above for example..

I also thought that you can do say an Air Force aircraft already in service, but you want to give it a new color scheme or tail design that you feel would look cool... I got that idea from Dave Roofs tail design that he did for that Harrier..

I also like the idea of different aircraft and vehicles for different countries.. Say a US Navy Rafale, or Australian Tornado/ Typhoon, or Canadian New Zealand Harriers ect...

The last idea I had was trainers converted to fighters for nations that need to build their numbers if in an event a war breaks out... And the history/story to go with them?

Helicopters should not be left out either.....

I'm thinking along the lines "what if Picasso designed an airplane?" :-D

If y'all put this to together, I'll try to come up with something to do. I've been building Super Hornets in squadron colors that didn't transition from F-14s and in one case a Blue Angel.

Thats one of the ideas I was refering Ed..

Even celebration aircraft could be included as well...

I will be building two 1/48 Vipers with special Danish and Norwegian markings. And I also have an A340, that I am thinking about for an Australian Airforce One...

I kinda like the freeform rules for a What-if Group Build. Make it aviation-related (so no ground builds for this one, we can always do a What-if Ground GB), and other than that, anything goes. You'll get stuff from "alternate paint scheme" to "something akin to a Su-27 flown by the USAF" all the way up to "I slapped together an F-16, an F/A-18E, and a Eurofighter, here's what I've got".

Free flow rules is the best approach, Sir. An F-15E with British markings and wearing Tornado colors. An F-105 Wild Weasel for the Israeli Air Force. ANY jets from the 50s in IAF colors.
A WW II P-51 Mustang in TPS scheme ( I saw a profile done by...Jennings (?)).
V-22s as used by cargo/courier companies.
Free flow rules are the best approach.
Consider me in.

I have two Tamiya P-51s being build with modern day color schemes. F-4D Skyrays are also in the works.

Ok, aircraft only. Free flow rules...

I think the less rules, the better in all honesty...

I will go first. I have (but probably won't complete all)

1/48 F-16B's in special Norwegian and Danish scheme.
1/144 1 x A340 (Australian Air Force One)

Other idea's:
1/48 Combat ready Mitsubishi T-4 in Australian markings.
1/48 Chinese Z-9 (Eurocopter Dauphin) in Queensland State Police markings.

Anyone know where I can get some more Monogram F-20's? Or maybe some of these?
