Default 1:72 F-14D/F-16 engine nozzle improvement

I've been working on a 1:72 Revell F-14D and the F110-GE engine nozzles are okay on the outside, but are completely smooth on the inside. I felt like that needed to change, but I'd rather not build photo etch engines at that scale and there aren't a ton of good resin options at that scale either. So what I did was used my Silhouette Portrait cutter to cut some vinyl to put on the inside:

Here you can see an unmodified engine, a modified engine and the vinyl for the unmodified engine. Even unpainted, they looked about 100 times better. After paint? Well, you be the judge:

I had primarily thought of my cutter as something to create paint masks with (and I definitely do a ton of that), but actually using it to build up detail like this gives me a ton of ideas. Also, since these engines are used on an awful lot of F-16's, I could use this for them as well.

Those look fantastic, Ed! If I can offer any critique at all, it's that the metal paint isn't terribly accurate for the inside of the engine bits you printed. If I recall correctly, they're ceramic (or at least coated in it) and often look tan, with burn markings readily visible.

You are absolutely right. I think it's a lighting and reflection thing. They actually look more accurate in person, though I probably dirtied them up a bit too much. I also need to dull coat them-they're kind of reflective. Also, my phone doesn't have the best camera.

Well, regardless, they're an amazing improvement. And you're selling that Silhouette cutter like no-one's business, man! I can think of so many uses for it and seeing some of the stuff you (and others) are doing, my reasons for not buying one are getting less and less audible.

I got mine off of eBay and it has been a lot of fun.

Nice work Ed! Made a world of difference! Wish I could find someone to task doing a vinyl BLOS panel for the F-16's tail base!

I've only seen one photo of BLOS, but if you linked me to some more photos, I don't think that'd be too hard to make. I'd be glad to have a go. I've got several 1:48 and 1:72 f-16 kits to try it out on.

That doesn't appear to be a compound curve so vinyl should work fine for it. I think it'd be pretty easy to make. When I get home from vacation I'll try to make one.

Hey Ed, wondering if you would mind trying this panel in 1/32 scale?

Let me try it in 1:48 first and then see if it would scale up. I don't currently have a 1:32 scale kit to try it on. What would help would be a measurement of the length of the edge closest to the rear of the kit - you can put a piece of tape where the back edge would be, cut it to length then measure it. With that, I can see if it should just do a 1:48 -> 1:32 conversion or something slightly different. I'll try this out this evening and post my results.

Not sure how well these show up (it's white vinyl), but here's my first attempt at 1:48:

I because of the curve, I'd probably recommend using some white glue on the edges if they won't stay down. This is based on the two photos you linked to, so the rivet count is a guesstimate. If you'd like to try it, I've cut a 1:32 version as well.
