Default Travel Notification for those comming to the 2011 Nats in Omaha in August

As of last Saturday, I-29 just north of the Omaha/Council Buffs area has been closed due to flooding from the Missouri River. Other sections of I-29 area expected to be shut down from Souix City, Iowa all the way down the river to Kansas City within the next few weeks, with some of these areas remaining closed until mid-August. I-80 through Omaha looks to be OK, but depending on the situation on the Platte River west of the Omaha metro area, this may change. I have provided some links to the Nebraska and Iowa Departments of Transportation so that you can plan your trip here in Omaha accordingly with few problems

Iowa DOT maps
Here are thier respective websites for more information....

Good luck and hope to see you here!

Thanks for the update. Coming up from KC may be a challenge! But, we'll make it there, one way or another.

I-80 travel from the east should be OK. I spoke to a Federal Weather Watcher and they seem to think, at the moment, that there shouldn't be any major problems for I-80 west of the Omaha metro area crossing the Platte river. I-29 is shut down on the north side from Missouri Valley down to Council Bluffs and on the south side between Hamburg, Iowa down to Rockport, MO.

I'm an NWS meteorologist. Looks like the major issues are I=29 and that they'll continue through mid-August at least. However, I-80 shouldn't get affected. I-29's closed from Omaha to Missouri Valley (mile marker 56-71) and Hamburg, IA to the Missouri-Iowa border. It may get worse, too, before it gets better, as the Corps of Engineers is releasing more water from Gavins Point dam in southern South Dakota than they planned.

Do you plan to get to Omaha via Kansas City?

There two routes that you can take out of KC

1) Take I-35 from KC to Des Moines and then I-80 straight into Omaha

2) Take I-70 from KC to Topeka, the US 75 from Topeka into Omaha (US 75 is restricted to 1 lane in Plattsmouth, which is just south of Omaha)

I wouldn't reccommend I-29 because it is closed at Rock Port, MO until at least mid-August and all of the bridges leaving I-29 into Nebraska are closed due to flooding.
