Default CVN-71 1/700

I have just bought the Trumpeter 1/700 Abe Lincoln CVN72 carrier and want to create the IKE from it CVN69. Has anyone built one of these 1/700 scale carriers from Trumpeter and if so - what are the things to look out for?

I have also ordered:

1 TU03438 Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King (6 in box)...
1 TU03433 Grumman EA-6B Prowler (6 in box)...
3 TU03422 Vought A-7E Corsair II (6 in box)...
1 GM70004D USN Supercarrier Decals (1/700 - 1/720 Scale...
1 GM70033 CVN details
1 ED17504 Aircraft carrier figures PRE-PAINTED IN COLOUR!...
3 TRU03424 - F-14A Tomcat
1 TRU03432 - S-3 Viking
2 TRU03421 - A-6E Intruder

Starfighter decals for Carrier Air Wing 7 1980

Five Star Model 1/700 #700043 USN Flags & Pennats Decal Set

EDP99047 - Eduard Photoetch 1:700 - USN Cable Reel

TRU06634 - Trumpeter 1:700 - Handrails & Ladders for 1/700 Ships (Photoetch)

I have never built a ship model before, only aircraft.

Sorry, I meant to say CVN 69.

Here are some images of the bits and pieces ordered:

Can anyone recommend some good reference books or sites?

I’ve started by making the first squadron of A-7E Corsairs and boy oh boy was I in for a shock. I don’t think it helped shifting from 1/32 scale down to 1/700, but even in this minute size each plane has five parts. To make matters even more complex the wings are produced in the fully extended position and not folded. So each plane had to have its outer wing section cut off then re-attached in the space saving folded position. Having looked at all of the Trumpeter aircraft sets – only the F-14A Tomcats have the option to build the wings ready for take-off or swept for storage.

There are drop tanks which will be attached after the aircraft has been painted and decaled. Extra pylons have also been made from very small bits of strip styrene.

Sorry but I'm in the process of trying to finish a 1/32 F/A-18C diorama, but this project is next on the workbench.

wow that looks great Marc!

I can't see properly from the picture, but what did you do for the canopies. Did you paint them or leave them clear?
