Default Who was 1 LT Laferty

I am building a 1/48 scale replica of Col Robin Olds’ F-4C, SCAT XXVII, AF40-829. On this aircraft the names of his WO and Crew Chief are listed as 1 LT Laferty and SSG Jarman. My research does not find 1 LT Laferty anywhere, but I do find info for 1 LT Daniel L. Lafferty who was at Ubon at the same time as Robin. My question is, does anyone know who 1 LT Laferty (with one “f”) was and did he fly back seat for any of Robin’s MiG kills or was his name on the aircraft from a prior crew assignment? On The 8th TFW site http://www.8tfw.org/ list of the MiG Kills, I see 1 LT Lafferty (with two “f’s”) flew with Maj Combies on May 20, 1967, but no entries for 1 LT Laferty!
Could the ground crew have mis-spelled his name, or is he not found anywhere on the Internet because he did not exist? And, if it was a spelling error, why is 1 LT Lafferty not listed as the back seat for any of Robin’s killls?
Any information of this person will be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance,
John

Capt. Dan Lafferty was a WSO at Ubon. This info can be found in Olds's book "Fighter Pilot". I think the crew got the spelling wrong. As for 1st Lt., who knows. He was a Capt. when he was WSO with Olds.

By the way, the Academy kit of SCAT XXVIII doesn't have the decal of the C.C. & 1LT Laferty included. That doesn't mean it wasn't on SCAT XXVII because it was..............

You are correct, 1st LT Lafferty was at Ubon during this time period. When Col Olds got his two MIGS on May 20th, 1967, his GIB was 1st LT Stephen Crocker. Upon returning to Ubon after that flight is when Robin and a few others painted the two stars on the intake ramp.
1st LT Lafferty was never logged as the GIB for Robin, rather he is listed as GIB for Maj Phil Combies on May 20th, 1967 with one MIG to their credit.
You are also correct that the model kit does not have the GIB nor the Crew Chief names on the decal sheet. I have made my own decals with the correct list of men responsible for the AC. It is most likely the way the aircraft was restored but the NMUSAF that resulted in the model scheme. An issue that Robin objected to, but was unable get approved.
My sources indicate that 1LT Lafferty never flew in 829. But, knowing that there were two shifts of ground crew supporting her, it is possible that he got a ride on one shift and not the other. But I do know he was not the GIB for her kills on May 20th, and his name is not spelled with one “f” as seen on the AC, if in fact it is one and the same person.

In the book by Olds, Dan Lafferty was said to be back seat for Maj. Combies in a CAP escort for F-105's. Lafferty was also with Olds on a bombing raid on a steel mill in N. Viet Nam. So my point is everyone moved around to different line jets. It was normal.

What seems abnormal is that there would be two WSOs with the same first and last names being at Ubon at the same period of time. One day, Lafferty was a 1st Lt. and the next day he was a Capt. Also normal.

I think it's conjecture to say if he was ever in "829" or not.Dan Lafferty would certainly know. Hard to find the answer without him.

Agreed. I think it was a spelling goof by the ground crew as well. There is plenty of supporting information for 1LT Lafferty and his contributions to the Bolo and Steel Mill missions. He is clearly mentioned in Robin’s book for the Steel Mill run and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on June 7, 1967. This all goes to say that I think the name on 829 was his, but spelled incorrectly.
My original question was who was 1LT Laferty, with one “f”? No one on any forum has been able to answer this question. I have to conclude there wasn’t such a person and that “he” never flew in 829.
My model will be built as she appeared in country at the time, misspellings and all. And I thank you and the others who have essentially come to the same conclusion.
In retrospect, I wonder if the reason the NMUSAF ignored Robin and Christina’s request to restore 829 to how she was during her time in Vietnam wasn’t in part due to their not being able to answer the question of who 1LT Laferty was?
Onward and upward!

I totally agree. Spelling error is logical.

My mistake, I sourced his name from the 8th TFW web site, they must have entered it wrong.
