Below is my current project. I need an opinion with regard to the Mod Eagle colors. Is it believeable as a 493rd FS jet? The lighter color could be darker and the darker color might need to be a little lighter. Or will I be able to pull it off and I should just call it a day and apply a wash?

Dude, I think it looks pretty darn good. The color should darken up a bit after clear and dark coating. I've seen several in person and of course in pictures that look pretty close. Interesting to see what the true Eagle Heads have to say. I like it!

Looks spot on to my eyes, the 493rd jets are very dirty so its really hard to get an idea of the true colour, I think the shades change with different weather conditions, which I presume was the whole idea. If you want some pictures as reference I could post them?

Those colors will darken up when the clear coat is applied. They look fine, really.

Mod Eagle is one of those paints that varies from unit to unit. Kadenas Mod is very dark, more "pure" grey.. Eglin is more blue/purple as is Langley..so it really varies.

Looks really nice.

Thank you for the reassurance. I tend to be a little OCD with my models.

As to the build...I resumed modeling after a six year lay off - got married, had a kid, and bought a house that needed renovating. Just didn't have the time.

I had originally intended to build it as an ODS jet from the 33rd Fighter Wing in ghost gray scheme. I still have the Superscale decals. I had finished the fuselage, with the exception of the vertical stabs. When I started the model I did not have the benefit of sites like this one. I mistakenly painted Bay 5 in a custom mix of metallic blue-green, which was difficult to repaint assembled.

I guess 1/32 scale maginifies imperfections. It also seems to take more of your time than 1/48. You really need to dry fit the major parts and adjust by scraping off plastic.

Major challenge areas:
Joinging the nose/cockpit are to fuselage. I have a bad habit of deviating from the instructions. I didn't secure the nose/cockpit section with screws but instead attached the section behind the cockpit to the area between the intakes first. For me it was easier to get a better fit when I attached the nose/cockpit area. I still needed putty and a lot of sanding to get the look I wanted.

Wings to fuselgae
Another challenging area. I finally learned from my other builds and cut off the tab next to the flaps that are used to secure the wings to the fuselage with screws. By removing the tabs it seemed to give me more play when adjusting the fit.

Vertical stab to fuselage.
This is another area where you might want to spend sometime checking the fit and sanding. I also scribed some detail on the fuselage above the area where the horizontal stab attaches.

Last, to update the Eagle's warload to slammers and sidewinders, I purchased LAU-129 launchers from Tamiya and attempted to scratch build an ADU-552 launch adapter, which didn't yeild a satisfactory product. I ended up using the kit supplied ADU-407 as a starting point to modify it into something that was close to an ADU-552.

Will do some paint touch up next and attempt a wash for weathering.

So far I am pleased with the kit and would recommend it. Aftermarket add ons that were not available to me like updated missle launchers and adapters would definitely add to the kit.

The blue-green Bay 5 is correct for all As and many Cs. It didn't get painted white until well into F-15C production.

I think the colors look great on the pics.

However, you might want to consider if the colors match the markings. If you're doing a 493FS jet, chances are that you have to use mod grey insignia (I guess you have the Astra decals), so they have to match the corresponding base color (36251 markings on 36176 color and vice versa). Not sure, but I think the 493d had their birds marked this way ever since they came from Spang. Don't remember seeing black Stars and Bars on them, but again, I might be wrong.

More than likely Lake's -15C's have the normal mod-eagle insignia. Even the few Spang jets they got had normal Mod's.

I was kind of thinking the same thing too. I guess the main issues would be the national insignia and the USAFE, squadron, and wing logos. I guess I'll determine what to do based on that.
