Smile 1/32 Top Gun Dioram Build

Hi Guys,

I originally started this post under the title Something Completely Different, but that thread is kind of in tatters so here it is again.

Basically, the whole project is in 1/32 scale and will try and capture one of the early flight scenes from the film Top Gun. The scene where Maverick and Goose go inverted above the MiG-28 (F-5). It will be called "Keeping up foreign relations" and is meant for the US Naval Aircraft SIG over here in the UK. It would not be the same without Maverick's middle finger being extended, and it will include Goose taking a Polaroid of the MiG.

The kits/parts used are:
  • Revell F-14A backdated to the correct block number
  • Academy F/A-18C pilot bodies
  • Tamiya F-4J Phantom pilot and WSO heads
  • Airfix Japanese Infantry multi-pose figure arms
  • Avionix F-14A Tomcat resin cockpit set
  • Home made decals
  • Hasegawa F-5E Tiger
  • True Details resin seat for the F-5

Here are some of the early build photos:

The seats are starting to take shape, and the helmets of Maverick and Goose have started to recieve decals and paint. Patches have also been painted and decalled on.

More updates to follow shortly, thanks for looking.

The helmets were copied from stills and a bit of artistic licence, they are not finished yet. Simply red, white and black decal cut into strips. The rest of the detail is hand-painted on.

It's a Polaroid - you have to stare at the pic for 60 seconds before it appears...

Still working on the cockpit which is nowhere near as good as the Tecknics offering. I am having to add lots of the controls and switches from plastic rod.

The camera is now in Goose's hands and looks okay.

The next obstacle to overcome is the thin cockpit sills; unlike the Tamiya kit - the Revell offering has totally incorrect sills. Not sure how to proceed on this one as I have never built this kit with the canopy closed.

I am open to suggestions.... clean suggestions.

The story so far.....

The cockpit has taken so much of my time, mainly because it is not brilliant quality in terms of detail. Perhaps the Avionix moulds were near the end of their life with this set.

So many switches and details were not present, these have been added with plastic rod and stretched sprue. You can see the gap where the correct cockpit sill should be, it is present in the Tamiya Tomcat kit. This will have to be made from card and the side walls from the resin set are too big to fit in, so some new sidewalls willl have to be made.

The other big problem is the air intakes. These are moulded in such a way that they leave a huge join inside. Not sure how to tackle this one yet.

The chaff and flare dispensers are in the wrong place; too far forward. These were filled and a new outline for them rescribed where they should be.

Lastly, the tops of each tail require the later-style re-enforcement plates to be added.

Does anyobody know what weapons Maverick's Tomcat was carrying in this scene? My copy of the film is at my sisters.

Haha! Ok cool! The original camera it is! I know it's still early in the build, but have you thought about how you're going to mount these?

You know, I was considering a similar build, (in 1/48), but waiting for *Ahem* SOMEONE to put out the movie markings for these jets...Looking good so far, though...
