Default Updated: 1/48 F-15E Strike Eagle

Well, the last F-15 build went well, so I thought it was time to build my 48th FW Wing King bird from when I was there.
I started in the cockpit using part of the black box pit. I wasn't about to grind out the sidewalls just to replace it with resin copies of the same. so I basically used the tub and seats, everything else is kit parts.
Here is the tub painted up

and the seats

Weathering will be kept to a bare minimum as we got these birds factory-fresh!
Thanks for looking

Great work so far. The texture on the seat cushion looks VERY realistic.

Looking great so far. I don't like the BB pit much, as it just seems to be a resin copy of the kit parts, but the seats are nice. Really looking forward to seeing the rest of this. Using AB decals on it?

Aaron

ps. Have you seen my pinned thread? Might help you a little. And if you have any more questions, let me know. If I can't answer them, Chris certainly can.

Hey Aaron,
I have seen your thread. Very useful and I'll be asking you for some help on my next OEF Mudhen.
I'm planning to build this one as 90-0248 with the Xtra Decal sheet (that's the plan for now at least). Once the AB sheet arrives, all bets might be off!
To build 248 in 1992 (when I was there) it's pretty much straight OOB, just adding the -229 scoops to the CFTs.
As for the BB pit, you're right. Everything in the set is just copied kit parts, other than the tub details and the seats. The inst. panels even have the mold punch markings on the back. I have a couple copies of the tubs so I'll use them and the seats.

Nice work so far- I agree with Aaron that the seats in that pit look really good! Also gotta agree with TomcatFanatic that the texture on the seat cushions is looking particularly nice.

Default update on Mudhen

Well, the plan to build this one as '248 lasted only to the time I recieved the AB Lakenheath sheet in the mail.
here are some update pictures. Everything is painted and decaled. Still need to gloss and flat coat, detail painting, and final assembly - so close, yet so far away still.

Here's the gear all done:

Finished Nav pod

and the TP

left side

right side

close up of tail

Hopefully I can get this finished this weekend and move onto the weapons...
thanks for looking! Comments, critiques welcome!

I thought that might happen!!! looks great so far Mike. I especially like the way you did the glass on the TP. Very realistic touch. Looking forward to seeing this Hen armed! I mean, what's a Strike Eagle without some iron?

Stunning work Mike, you've put alot of work into her and it shows.
Just one little nit pick, I could be very wrong but I think the wing shield and the Sqn shield are on the wrong sides.Wing shield starboard,Sqn shield port. Every picture I've got of a 492nd FS jet has it that way. Saying that I haven't got one of your tail number. So like I said I could be wrong.

Can't wait to see her finished. What you gonna load her out with?

What gloss coat are you using? It really looks smooth.

Jon, thanks for the comments!
There are going to be some differences from the sheet instructions. I'm back dating this bird to the 1993 deployment for ODF.
When we first got our strikes, the badges were done this way. I'll try to post some pictures I've got from then.
The plan is to do her up with GBU-12's from the reprisal strike against Serb forces following the mortar shelling of the Serajavo (sp?) market in '95.
The 492nd deployed 8 jets in the summer of '93, and '0301 was one of them.

cheers,
Mike

Geoff,
I used future. I tried spraying multiple coats, but kept getting a fine pebbly surface. So, I tried brushing it on for the first time, and I am very pleased with it.

I've never gotten future to lay down the way I want it to from the airbrush. I don't know if I have the guts to brush it on.

Then that makes perfect sense to me Mike, you are indeed spot on with the badges, they were carried like that during that time frame. Great eye for detail!

Super build. I have a ODS Strike that I plan on building one of these days and this is certainly an inspiration. I look forward to seeing it finished.

I've always had the same difficulties airbrushing Futrure. I have brushed it on small areas before, but never an entire model, sounds interesting. I may have to give it a try.

I really messed up one of the tails, so I had nothing to lose. I actually poured it on the tail out of the jar and sloshed it around. when it dried, I had a little peel at the bottom, but just wiped that off with amonia water and reapplied with the brush.
I brushed a thin coat of future on the spot I was about to place a decal and gave it a few minutes to setup, then applied the decal and it snuggled right down with no setting solution.

Default Final update

Hopefully, this will be the last update before she's done. I dull coated and pulled the masking off. It was kind of like removing bandages after surgery....
thankfully everything came out ok, no underspray or paint pull-off.

here's the top:

and bottom:

cockpit and HUD:

and one of the pylons with Shawn Hull LAU-129:

Next up final painting and assembly then on to the weapons...

thanks for looking!

Mike
