Default F-16D conversion

Hey Shawn,
Can you tell me when your D conversion for the Tamiya F-16 family will be available....won't be able to get to NATS to see it.

Well, the plan is to have it ready for the Nats, but I'm going to be cutting it pretty close to make it happen. I hadn't really mentioned this project yet because I'm not too sure how it's going to turn out. But since Scott let the `ol cat out of the bag, here she is.

The canopy & hump are from the Hasegawa kit, and that canopy was a bitch to get it to fit the Tamiya kit. The bottom frame is all-around too short, the back half too narrow, and the front half way to wide. I further trimmed down the frame, cut about 2-3mm off the the Tamiya canopy and grafted it on the front half, and used what I had cut out of the fuselage for the back half. After a lot of sanding & cussing, I got a pretty decent fit. I plan on casting the canopy in clear resin. I'm a little nervous on how that's going to turn out, it's the deal breaker if this set happens or not. Guess I'll see when I get back in town.

And for anyone curious on how the Hasegawa spins fit, ehh, not so well. The spine is short (from top to bottom) compared to the Tamiya tail base. I cut off the end of the spine and matched up the Tamiya tail end piece, and it's probably 2-3mm short, and narrow in width. I'll probably work on making it fit once the basic D set is all done.

Of course by doing this it's all but assured that the big T will drop the D next year But after working on the Luke sheet, I really wanted a tub.

That's pure awesome, Shawn! A 'D' conversion with your quality of casting should be like printing money!

I need a tamiya-quality 'D' so badly I can taste it!!

Shawn

Thank you very much for working on this. Ever since I picked up the Tamiya 16, it has been hard to go back to my stack of Hasegawa birds. What a difference. Of course only us modellers with AMS would notice, but I digress.

If this is ready for Phoenix, I will get one there if you do not sell out before I reach your table. Also, as you say, I expect Tamiya to issue the D but it will probably not be for a few years. Tamiya always seem to not do what you would expect.

However, having said that, look at all the other companies issuing 2 seaters with the big spine. Maybe they will jump on the band wagon. I certainly hope so. I better start saving my pennies now just in case

Cheers

Are you going to provide a two-seat tub as well Shawn, or are we going to be "on our own" to get a Aries pit or similar?

Brilliant! I'm so much hoping that the canopy could be cast in resin and the whole set could be sold through your web very soon...

I need one as well. It will go good with the new AB Luke sheet, plus I need a 2 seat version to make the jet I had my incentive ride in.

Yep, I was in Phoenix at the time. Well, here is where she's at. Didn't quite get it ready for nats, by a long shot. The fuselage piece is done, I actually had a cast piece of it to show off in Phoenix. The canopy is done-ish. The overall shape is done. The bottom part is pretty fragile, made up of plastic putty, super glue (the black stuff), and some spit & cussin'. It wouldn't hold up to scribing & riveting so I molded & cast it, so as to scribe/rivet it, and then make the final mold for casting. I added the framing from bare metal foil, but didn't like how it looked when I cast it, so I need to redo the framing & mold/cast it again.
Other bits done include the rear cockpit tub & instrument panel coaming. The tub has a tab on the front that will locate into the slot on the rear of the kit part. I'm kinda taking the lazy way out and just tweaking the Tamiya seat a bit. Plan is to include both types of air sensor pitots & a couple of different seat back cushions.
Work still to be done are the rear tub sidewalls, rear instrument panel, canopy lift mechanism, and some other small stuff that I can't think of at the moment.
I've kinda slacked off this week as I burnt myself out trying to get ready for Phoenix. I'll have my website back open this weekend, with 3 new things that I actually had available for the nats, a ALQ-184 long ecm pod for the A-10 & F-4G, the sniper pod for the RAF Harrier GR.9s, and the GE nozzle set for the F-15s. I fell short on getting the ALQ-131 & PIDS pylons done in time for the show, but should have them ready by end of month.
