Default 1/350 CVN-65 in 1976

It's a six year project, at least that's what I keep on telling myself. Converting the Tamiya USS Enterprise back to the mid seventies beehive fitment complete with a bright and colourful airwing. No tonned down grey here, CAW14 with several airframes carrying bi-centennial markings. I decided to use the various Trumpeter 1/350 aircraft sets as I plan to show some aircraft with their canopies open.

Some of the anti-slip surfaces and ID markings which will be printed on to inkjet decal film.

The tractors will also have various side markings etc.

Totally cool. I could tell you were crazy from your work on the previous build, but now I can see...your nuts!

In a good way of course.

Thanks, I'm no longer building commisioned models/diorams, the money is nice but after all these years there's nothing to look at. From now on every model that I build is staying inside my own display cabinet.

Holy Crap!

I dont believe this! You got way too much time on your hands! C'mon, ejection seats for a 1/350 jet! Sitting here shaking my head in awe! You rock Admiral Badass!

the almighty Kelly Quirk.

It's difficult typing when you're bowed down in reverence to a modelling master, but I must say that I have just tried to airbrush these humble, small aircraft and failed - miserably. I loathe using an airbrush and let's just say that the models are okay but I have thrown two airbrushes in the rubbish. Can anyone point me in the direction of some airbrushing lessons, a simple to use airbrush and a good shrink. I wouldn't mind but I've been using one for the past 30 years.

My decal sheet instructions indicate that only 6 S-3A Vikings were on the Enterprise in 1976, is this right?

Pretty standard number for most cruises the past 30 years. But no guarantee.

Six S-3A's decaled and ready for the cockpit details and MAD booms to be added, then its landing gear, gear doors, pylons, engines and drop tanks.

I am happy with the results so far.

1/350 scale that looks better than my 1/72 scale. I need a different hobby.

The kit does not supply the parts to show the carrier prior to its major refit from January 1979 to March 1982. The island structure is perhaps the most obvious difference and the kit parts need lots of adjustment or replacing.

The later island had a sort of wedge recess on the left-hand, port side:

The UNREP station should have four windows with fairly flush glazing so this part of the kit will be removed and created from acetate and masked/painted to create the windows. Also the prifly area needs to have its floor replaced before details can be added inside. A doorway has already been cut.
