Question for a Ship Guy!

On decks of naval ships, "Cable Reels" can be found. What are these reels used for? In my case I am looking for an answer pertaining to WWII Japanese Battleships. Any answer will be appreciated.

TIA!!!

Jim,

A cable reel is used for stowing the berthing hawser's / lines. (That's what hold's the ship alongside a wharf/ another ship etc.) They can be made of rope or some are/were steel wire rope. I hope that answers your question.

Cheers,
Devo
